With the Christmas holidays at the office, don’t forget to make sure everyone gets home safely. So you’ve booked your table, ordered your turkey… Nottingham taxi company DG Cars is hiring 175 new drivers during the pandemic – and there are still jobs to come.

With fewer people traveling during the lockdown, it’s been a lean time for taxi companies, but one company in Nottingham has bucked the trend by hiring 175 new drivers.

Instead of losing drivers, DG Cars hired more employees to help closed restaurants stay afloat during the pandemic by providing takeout to customers.

Local restaurants and taxi drivers have both been hit hard by the lockdown restrictions that prevent people from eating out. Restaurants remained without charge and taxi drivers were also desperate to find work after passengers dropped off.

In response, DG Cars decided to launch a new delivery service that would allow local restaurants to reach people in their homes and allow taxi drivers to find a new source of work.

The initiative has been so successful that the taxi company works with more than 160 restaurants in Nottingham and Derby, with around 3,000 delivery orders sent to drivers every week.

The taxi company now extends the service to retailers to help them deliver goods to customers.

They deliver to major cash and carry, Hyperama in Derby, convenience stores and have partnered with NHS pharmacies to deliver medicines.

The drivers wear false teeth, live leche and glass eyes and can take almost anything – as long as it fits in a taxi – anywhere in the UK.

In the future, the company hopes to work with “all types of retailers” – from florists to butchers.

In addition to the 175 new drivers recently hired, the company expects to add another 75 drivers over the next four months to meet demand.

Omair Javaid, director of DG Cars, said: “In a difficult economic climate, it was a fantastic opportunity to support local businesses and connect the community.

“It has also opened the door for our business – allowing us to offer a new opportunity to our drivers who have been struggling due to a lack of traditional passenger and work companies.

“We plan to further expand the service in the coming months. Many vulnerable people now rely on supplies. So the more companies we can work with, the better for them in terms of the options available.”

Restaurants serving the service range from Asian street food Chao Chao and Michelin-recommended tapas restaurant Bar Iberico to Indian restaurant Masala Junction and crispy Bestwood Fisheries.

Ryan Schofield, director of internal business development at Chao Chao, a franchise restaurant with sites in Arnold, West Bridgford and Beeston, said: “Working with DG solved a lot of problems for us – we struggled to get enough drivers to drive Execute. order during busy periods.

“With access to a large network of drivers, we now know that orders will be taken quickly – and that the food will reach our customers as fresh as it left our house.”

Restaurant customers simply order online or by phone. The delivery item then enters Delivery Point, a technology platform developed by Autocab, which outsources the work to local drivers at DG Cars.

Nottingham City Council is taking steps to make the city’s taxi fleet one of the best and most modern in the country. Having already introduced a Driver Improvement Penalty Point plan to raise passenger standards, the city council will order a small number of new Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) models and invest in infrastructure support charges.

A new black and white model will replace the existing green booths and allow for the first time full advertising and new digital media on the booths. The goal is for all 411 taxis in the city to be ULEV or Euro VI compliant by 2020 to help the city meet air quality standards and support potential Clean Air Zones. Some of the taxis will have free Wi-Fi, charging stations for mobile phones and laptops.

A new app for Nottingham’s Hackneys will be released to accompany the release of the new cars. The city government has partnered with MyTaxi, which allows passengers to book a taxi from their smartphone, pay cashless and make the trip with registered drivers – making it easier and safer for everyone. They also have some really vibrant and fun graphics put on their cabs that will definitely make them stand out from the crowd.
