The Best Places To Eat And Drink In Kent, Chosen By Gary Rhodes

Chapter One in Kent is modern, stylish and comfortable, and as far as contemporary fine dining goes, Chapter One is a unique touch – it’s neither an urban townhouse nor a rustic country establishment. Indeed, its location on the busy road connecting the Kentish towns of Bromley and Orpington is a little inconvenient. But of course the food is different.

Back in good shape – Chef Andy McLeish has been running the kitchen at this culinary beacon near Orpington for more than 20 years, and a business partner bought it five years ago. A “lovely place” on London’s south-east border, now “absolutely buzzing – the food and service are excellent and the tables are well spaced”. “You are always guaranteed the best food, service and atmosphere for lunch or dinner.”

Recent renovations have boosted support for this “lively and bustling” local area where everything is done better the old fashioned way.

Intelligent cooking and on-site service – AA Inspector. Andrew McLeish’s upmarket venue is a real treat, with extras such as a relaxed brasserie and popular terrace. The more formal restaurant sets a sophisticated tone with its crisp linen tablecloths and vibrant gastronomic artwork on plain white walls. Deceptively spacious, the decor is modern and comfortable, with wooden floors, dark blue furniture and light blue panels. Long established and well supported by locals, the atmosphere is chatty and friendly, with well-trained waiting staff in formal black waistcoats and aprons. Whether you choose a la carte or the wallet-friendly menu du jour, McLeish strikes an appealing balance between compelling modern European cooking and a desire to show value. There is a clear understanding of classic techniques, and well-established favorites are preferred over trying to recreate things for resources. Seasonal ingredients from a network of high quality suppliers mean the menu is constantly changing depending on what’s best at the time and what’s coming into the kitchen. Onion Lyonnais, chicken with chicken and celery jus is a good starter, as well as ravioli with girolle mushrooms and molasses-cured salmon with soy sesame dressing and sauteed spring onions. Mains are further evidence of clever flavor pairings, perhaps with curried cauliflower mash, roasted spinach, roasted cauliflower and cumin sauce, or roasted guinea, potato, hippy cabbage, roasted sweetcorn and smoked gumbo. Desserts continue in the form of flavored peanut parfait, double chocolate brownie, Kentish raspberry and blackberry and passionfruit mille feuille poached with raspberry or blackberry sorbet. If there’s room, it’s hard to resist English and French cheese with fruit toast, Lavroche crackers and spiced chutney. Maybe it’s time to drop by for one of the restaurant’s famous gourmet evenings.

True Blue, Baby I Love You

Bold tables and gourmet prints set a sophisticated tone in Andrew McLeish’s relaxed space. Here he finds the perfect balance between modern cooking with many surprises and a compelling need to provide value.

Please understand that this is a scam. We understand that other restaurants in London and the South East have also been targeted.
