If you are wondering where to stay in Chamonix, in the French Alps, I recommend booking at Terminal Neige, Refuge du Monteneurs. Recently renovated, this famous mountain hotel, which is over 100 years old, offers a truly unforgettable stay for those looking for solitude, adventure and unspoiled beauty in the heart of the Alps.

Perched above the Mer de Glace Glacier at an altitude of 1913 meters, the Refuge du Montenvers offers guests the unique experience of high-altitude seclusion in comfortable, well-appointed accommodation. Built in the 1880s to welcome mountaineers, climbers and first-time explorers to the Mer de Glace Glacier, this lodge is steeped in Alpine history and stands out for its mountain views. Whether you’re already in Chamonix or skiing at another nearby French resort, it’s worth staying at this altitude.

The only way to get to Hotel Terminal Nige Montenors is by old train and train (unless you are a serious hiker or hiker).

Accessible only by the famous train and pinion from Montenvers, Chamonix’s oldest tourist attraction, reaching the hotel is an adventure.

The Refuge de Montenvers, formerly The Grand Hotel du Montenvers, has been recently renovated and offers stylish accommodation.

The amazing thing about staying at Terminal Neige Refuge du Montenvers is that as soon as the last train leaves at 4:30 pm every day, the mountain is yours. Turn off the mute and listen to the silence as the sun sets behind Europe’s highest mountains.

Chamonix Weekender: Bring On The Powder

We cannot recommend staying here, even for one night. This is the final stop for hikers, outdoor families and those who want to get lost (in relaxation) in the mountains. Terminal Nage welcomes families and has a variety of room combinations to suit family groups.

The Mer de Glace glacier is a spectacular mountain view. It’s a shame it’s so far behind. In the 17th century, the people of the place were scared when the snow hit the mountains.

The Mer de Glace glacier, the longest in France at 7 km, is a prominent sheet of ice that crosses the valley behind Mont Blanc, the highest point in Europe.

This glacier is truly the jewel in the crown of France. If you are traveling or planning to travel to France, check out this article – 13 Hidden Gems in France.

Just two minutes’ walk from the hotel is the view of the Mer de Glace. The famous caves of Chamonix can be reached by gondola (included in the train ticket) between 10:30 and 16:00.

The hotel, formerly the Grand Hotel du Montenvers, opened in 1880, just before the railway was built. A mule road built in 1820 was used to access the site and the first building was built in 1840 which was built in 1879 with 60 beds and a restaurant. More than 200 donkeys transport 12,000 visitors every year to this beautiful desert to see the incredible snow up close. It was really nice to visit the hotel at that time.

Compassionately restored by the Maison Sibuet hotel brand, this historic building reopened its doors to guests in July 2017. Set in a mountain retreat, this unique hotel offers elegant half-board accommodation.

The room is just decorated. Original wood paneling preserves the building’s historic charm, while modern amenities combine to create a comfortable and elegant interior.

Hotel Le Chamonix, Chamonix

The true alpine spirit can be seen in small details, like the rope lights on the stairs and the black and white photographs of inns and glaciers of yore.

Head to the library and browse dusty leather-bound books from the golden age of mountaineering, or view area maps to plan your next climb or alpine trip.

The ground floor is a large open space with a bar, a restaurant, a fireplace with leather chairs and cozy cushions.

While the hotel is not specifically designed for families, it does have several family rooms and my kids were welcomed to play downstairs with smiling staff.

Adjacent patios are perfect for playing board games, reading a book or sharing a romantic bottle of wine.

20 rooms offer a variety of accommodation for all groups. We stayed in famille randonneur famille room 5 (from €305 for 2) which is perfect for a family with two beds and a sofa bed in the master bedroom with adjoining beds.

The hideaway rooms (from €210 for two) are doubles, many offering a unique view of the glacier (see below). I love the use of mountain wool fabrics and bright colors that pop from the soft colors and wood paneling. A spring carpet floor mimics a hardwood floor, while antique radiators put a lot of heat in the sky rooms.

The Randonneur Room (€210 for two people) sleeps up to 3 people with a double bed and sofa. All slate and chrome, the compact bathroom is stylish. A rain shower is wonderful, but the view, even from the shower, is breathtaking.

In the attic, the Tribu bathroom can accommodate 5 or 7 people (2 for €305 or €400, additional people are charged per person), perfect for a family or group of people. Children will love sleeping on the rafters.

We are delighted to have maintained the spirit of this iconic building by adding 10 rooms to Maison Cibot Arc.

The original hotel accommodated sophisticated travelers, famous writers, and female travelers only in dormitories, with no private rooms.

At the mercy of the elements, the hotel was forced to close for 20 days this winter due to the amount of snow.

At one point, guests had to stay one more night when the 6km track was clear of snow so the train could go up the mountain.

We happily heard these stories and of course I secretly hoped this would happen to us!
