Loire Valley Châteaux You Simply Cannot Miss
After the Hundred Years War ended, many of the forts built in the frontier areas were converted into pleasure palaces for the nobility. During the Renaissance, they became a popular court and French kings built new luxurious palaces.
Today, some palaces are privately owned and have been converted into hotels. In some of them you can stay overnight and feel like royalty!

Loire Valley France Travel: Luxury Hotel Spa By Christophe Hay Is Foodie Must
Since I was traveling without a car, I decided to stay in two places for easy access to the most famous castles – the cities of Tours and Blois. Both can be reached by direct train from Paris.
This way I could easily get to Chateaux de Chambord, Chaumont and d’Amboise from Blois and Chenonceau from Tours. I did not miss the spectacular sound and light show at the Château Royale de Blois in the evening.
In Blois I stayed at the Mercure Blois Center – a great hotel with an indoor pool and a fantastic location, just a short walk from the old town.
In Tours, I booked La Maison Jules – a centrally located B&B in a historic mansion with a garden (+ amazing breakfast).
Honest Guide → Where To Stay In Loire Valley (with Prices!)
Are you looking for a convenient central place to stay to explore the most famous châteaux of the Loire? Here are the most popular cities and hotels:
The Loire Valley is not just one place, it is an area along the Loire River that covers more than 280 kilometers (170 miles). So before you decide where to stay, there are a few things to consider:
This is one of the main things you need to decide before deciding where to stay. There are more than 300 castles in the Loire Valley, and about 20 are the most popular among visitors. These popular castles are located in the area between the cities of Angers and Orleans. However, it is still a large area (more than 2 hours and 30 minutes between Angers and Orleans). So you should reduce it.
If it’s your first time in the Loire, I recommend starting with Château de Chambord and Château de Chenonceau. These two palaces are a must visit. If you have time, Château de Blois, Château de Chaumont, Château d’Amboise and Château de Villandry are also worth a visit. All the castles mentioned are located in the area between Tours and Blois.
Le Clos D’amboise
To visit the most popular castles, stay in the eastern part of the Loire Valley (between Tours and Blois). However, if you want to visit a fort in the west, I recommend staying in 2 areas. This will save you a lot of travel time.
This is another key point that you should decide before booking accommodation. Most of the forts are accessible only by car. Fortunately, the most popular ones (Château de Chambord and Chenonceau) can be reached by public transport. Still, depending on where you stay, you may have to take a train (or two) and then a shuttle bus.
Note that the Chatea shuttle buses usually only run during the summer months. This means that if you are traveling outside of high season, the castles are only accessible by car.
That’s why I advise, when you decide which palaces to visit, see how to get to each of them. Sometimes, traveling to a fort (from your base) can take time, especially if you travel by public transport.
Luxury Holidays And Tours To The Loire Valley 2022/2023
Most castle hotels are located outside the cities. In this case, you need to rent a car to get around. Of course, it is possible to find a variant with relatively easy public transport. However, you will lose a lot of time traveling from one place to another.
So if you want to stay in the castle, I highly recommend renting a car. Keep in mind that dinner options are limited unless you want to drive to the nearest town.
Staying in one of the cities of the Loire Valley has two main advantages – easy public transport and many restaurants. The main cities where people stay when exploring the valley are Tours, Amboise and Blois. In addition, there is a direct train from Paris to Blois and Tours (less than 2 hours).
My best advice is – book your accommodation in advance. It is a very popular destination especially during the summer months.
Chateau De Chissay, Loire Valley
While looking for a trip, I found recommendations for stays in Saumur, Chinon, Langeais and Azay-le-Rideau. The towns may be charming, but they are far from the most popular castles (for example, Château de Chambord is a 1 hour 30 minute to 2 hour drive).
These places are simply not practical for first-time visitors. If you decide to stay in one of these cities, choose a second base where you can easily visit the popular palaces in the east.
The easiest way to explore the Loire Valley is certainly by car. You’ll be able to see the forts at your own pace without sticking to a tight schedule and worrying about missing your train.

Château Turned Boutique Hotel In France’s Loire Valley
The best places to stay in the Loire Valley by car are Amboise and Blois. Both towns are centrally located and are excellent bases for exploring the major châteaux of the Loire. They are less touristy than touristy and have that old French charm that you will fall in love with!
Amboise is smaller but offers more unique places to stay than Blois. In comparison, Blois has more historic buildings and beautiful half-timbered houses. Besides visiting the castle, you can also find other activities (Saint-Louis Cathedral, Jardins de l’Eveche, House of Magic).
Amboise is the perfect city to use as a base for visiting the Loire Valley. The famous chateaux of Chenceau and Chambord are less than an hour away. In addition, the city has its own impressive castles – Château d’Amboise and Château du Clos Luz. The latter is known as the last home of Leonardo da Vinci.
