Twelve years ago, when my husband and I were looking at vacation rentals in the Hamptons, we thought we’d find a place in Montauk, but decided it was too far from civilization. It turns out we were wrong. Although this town is known as “The End” for its location on the eastern side of Long Island (approximately 120 miles from New York City), it is packed with restaurants, shops, hotels and hospitality, especially in the summer. .

You’ll find shops full of $ 3,000 Chanel bags alongside shops with souvenir T-shirts. There are cocktail bars across the street from the fisherman bars where fishermen often work. And of course, there are plenty of hotels to accommodate the many people who come to Montauk these days, from surfers to yoga enthusiasts to families.

My husband and I bought a house in the neighboring town and are so excited to be so close to Montauk that we can go out to eat at the hotel restaurants, enjoy a cocktail on the beach, and even hang out from time to time. Here is my list of the best hotels in Montauk.

Marram Montauk — Hotel Review

Pros: The hotel is cheaper than most hotels in the area, with plenty of space and a beautiful beach.

Cons: Some of the places are a bit old and there is no restaurant online. There aren’t many restaurants within driving distance or nearby.

Nestled between two state parks on a stretch of beach, Driftwood on the Beach is a luxury find. Technically the hotel is on the edge of the town of Amagansett, but I can confirm that it is spiritually connected to Montauk.

At first glance, the home’s bespoke furniture doesn’t look like much, like something you might see on a Florida beach, with decor that can be hit and miss. Some rooms have been refurbished with elegant beach decor in blue and white, while others date back to the early 1980s. Most of the rooms have kitchens or terraces overlooking the sea.

But you don’t come here to stay inside. Swim in the outdoor pool. Play on the tennis court. Compete in a heated shuffleboard game. Grill some local seafood on the barbecue. Take a walk through Hither Hills State Park. And don’t miss the protagonist of the show: the main beach, which is often not pleasant, even in the height of summer.

Pros: One of the most affordable hotels in Montauk, it comes with free perks like s’mores. It is also dog friendly.

Cons: The rooms are small and there is no restaurant. Some guests complain that Wi-Fi can be spotty.

A few years ago, my family and I were renting our home, so we decided to spend the weekend in Montauk. We chose the Haven, a luxury hotel from the 1970s that has been refurbished with a grand scandi-chic style. Our daughter (who was a child at the time) loved sitting on the patio chairs in the garden and swimming on a giant swan in the kidney-shaped pool.

There are many hotels in Montauk that focus on the cool resort, but Haven appeals to families and couples who don’t mind a 5-year-old splashing around in the water next to them. Indeed, Haven celebrates the simple pleasures of life, such as roasting s’more over a brazier. The hotel also offers free s’mores to guests.

The Haven is located in Montauk Bay, a quiet area where fishing boats bring in their daily catch. Two of my favorite restaurants in the Hamptons are nearby: Salivar’s Clam & Chowder House (big sushi) and Swallow East (small plates). Just across the street is a small beach where the hotel can arrange free umbrellas and blankets for you for the day.

Pros: The program offers excellent value for money and the hotel is undervalued, yet still very affordable even during the high season.

One of my favorite experiences in Montauk was celebrating a friend’s 40th birthday at the Backyard Restaurant in Solé East. No wonder the owner chose this spot to host the big birthday party – the restaurant is set in 2.5 acres of landscaped gardens, complete with outdoor seating, twinkling lights from the trees, hammocks and the fire pit.

The restaurant is one of the many things that make Solé East so special. The building itself is beautiful: a large Tudor building overlooking Fort Lake. There are 60 specially designed rooms and seven cabins; each has touches of luxury like Italian 300 thread count linens.

On the grounds there is a large heated swimming pool surrounded by St. Tropez, where guests can relax and listen to live music and DJs by the pool. Do you want to go to the sea? It’s only a five-minute walk or three-minute bike ride from the beach, and the hotel has dozens of boats you can hire to take you there.

The hotel also has a sister property, Solé East Beach, if you prefer to be directly on the beach. Guests of the Solé East Beach have access to all the facilities of the Solé East Resort, although not the other way around.

Montauk Beach House combines the best of both worlds: it is just blocks from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and within walking distance of Montauk’s shops, restaurants, bars and parks. Improving the appeal: limited design and social context.

Montauk Blue Hotel, Montauk

With classic furniture, soaring ceilings and soaring ceilings, the rooms will feel like you are living in the beach house of your dreams. Additionally, Montauk Beach House offers sustainable linens, towels and bathrobes from the Farm to Home company, which produces beautiful organic designs in India.

The public spaces are also interesting. The hall is filled with splendid artistic and cultural events that will take place throughout the summer, including NFT digital exhibits, interactive light installations, film screenings.

And other. Actress Naomi Watts has launched an outdoor spa for her brand, ONDA Beauty (specializing in natural, clean, non-toxic products). And as if that wasn’t enough, the hotel also has a collection of BMW cars that guests can borrow. Don’t miss: the hotel’s weekly Sun Friday sessions, featuring live music and music as the sun sets over the Montauk skyline.

Pros: This beach hotel offers a discreet approach to health and wellness with yoga and meditation, fine dining and surfing.

The 10 Best Montauk Beach Resorts

I wasn’t happy when I discovered two years ago that one of my favorite resorts in Montauk had succumbed to health problems. But I was surprised to learn that the new Marram offers a new addition to the local hotel scene with a simple and unobtrusive approach to health.

Though only five minutes from Montauk’s main square, Marram encourages visitors to slow down. Instead of the festive atmosphere that Montauk is known for, there is morning yoga, sunrise meditation, and evening pranayama (breathing) led by local and visiting yogis. You can take guided and self-guided nature walks along the gaps in Shadmoor State Park. The hotel has an international perspective and a South American restaurant, Mostrador, led by two chefs from Uruguay.

The material itself takes inspiration from the surrounding environment. It takes its name from the grass that grows on the dunes around the house. With unfinished white oak walls, hand-carved cedar exteriors and mahogany walkways, Marram’s architecture and design reflect the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. Fun Fact: A popular surf break called Terrace is right in front of the hotel, so don’t miss out on surfing with Marram’s excellent instructors.

Pros: One of Montauk’s best beach resorts, within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants.

Montauk Manor Review: What To Really Expect If You Stay

At Hero Beach Club you will find the perfect combination of tranquility and culture, all set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. The original 1950s buildings create a strong nod to Montauk culture (artists, fishermen, surfers) and the outdoors, complemented by modern design and modern amenities like bicycles and wood.

One of the winning features of Hero Beach Club is that the surrounding area is well maintained by the Peconic Dunne Land Trust (meaning,
