Best Hotels In Meteora Greece – After the Parthenon in Athens, Meteora is the main place to visit in mainland Greece. Awesome, awesome, understated and not much like Delphi. An overnight stay is essential to see the monasteries at their best.
The Foundations of Meteora Meteora was built over the centuries on majestic hills crowned by a collection of beautiful monasteries. 6 of the 24 original monasteries are still active and open for tours. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the heart of Greece, approximately 4 hours from Athens and 3 hours from Thessaloniki. There are two main destinations on the way to Meteora: the town of Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki. In short, the Palace has more attractions and Kalambaka has more shopping. Both have excellent hotels and restaurants and daily bus services to the monasteries. It only takes 15 minutes to walk between the two (or a very short bus/taxi ride), and it’s easy to stay in one place and go to the other. The best way to get to know the monasteries of Meteora is on a guided tour. There are several companies offering similar tours from Kalambaka/Kastraki and they are all good. We want to go to Meteora. A classic (and highly recommended) combination is a 5-hour hike in the morning followed by sunset in the evening. Inside the monasteries, a strict dress code applies: skirts cut below the knee for women, long pants or shorts below the knee for men. Both are prohibited from wearing sleeveless shirts. A kirbka and shawl can usually be borrowed or purchased at the monastery entrance for the unprepared. Kalambaka is the commercial center of the region and is buzzing with activity. Both the train station and the bus station are in Kalambaka, so it’s easy to find a hotel if you’re coming from Athens. While Kalambaka and Kastraki both have great restaurants, Kalambaka has more variety. Fast food, pubs and pizzerias share the streets with traditional Greek taverns. While the hotels along the city’s main strip are less touristy and less glamorous, the service is excellent and there are good deals here. For a more authentic Kalambaka experience, stay away from the city center with traditional hotels in the shadow of the meteor. With two swimming pools, a gym, an in-house restaurant and a bar, Kalambaka’s best hotel is the Diwani Hotel. In addition to good food and proximity to monasteries, Kalambaka offers tourist attractions and family-friendly attractions such as the Museum of Natural History and Mushrooms, the Museum of Greek Education and the Metron Digital Screening Center. 3D film showing of the area’s architecture and history. In the upper, older part of the town stands the Byzantine Church of the Assumption, which dates back to the 4th century and has preserved many unique artistic and architectural features from numerous renovations over the past 1,700 years. If you like glamour, Castrocchi wins hands down. Beautiful buildings with red roofs line the roads here, leading to the monasteries through the flowery hills. Kastraki’s beautiful town square is located in the center of the village, next to the magnificent Peter and Paul Church, a children’s playground and the pink museum of geological formations – the village’s old primary school building. Daupiani House, the best hotel in Kastraki, has a spectacular view of Meteora. In Kastraki, hotels and guesthouses sit next to detached houses, family-run tavernas and bakeries, allowing visitors to experience the tranquility of rural life for a few days. Instead of movement, crowing roosters, rustling leaves and church bells are the background noise. In the evenings, the main square becomes a meeting place for local children’s soccer activities and old people gathering to shoot the breeze. However, it’s only a 15-minute walk to Kalambaka, so you’re never far from the center of the action.
