Best Golf Courses In Perth – Growing up in Western Australia and playing golf was certainly an exciting adventure. The number of quality public access courses to choose from in Perth’s inner suburbs was incredible and it all started for me at Embleton Golf Course, five minutes from where I lived.
As an eight-year-old beginner, I thought this nine-hole, par-31 layout was the best course ever! That was the beginning of my golf education throughout the metro area of the city.

After “Royal Embleton”, as my father called it, I went to various courses including Rosehill, Hillview, Wembley, Hammersley and Collier Park. I visited each regularly for junior tournaments or just for fun. Today, these courses and others are creating the foundation for some of the best value public spaces in the country.

Hillview is spread over the foothills of the eastern suburbs and offers 27 attractive holes in a relaxed atmosphere. Wembley Golf Complex has 36 holes in the woods northwest of the city, just five minutes from the beach. Its swing driving range is state-of-the-art and one of the best miniature golf facilities in the country has recently been added. If the kids aren’t having fun there, take away their iPhones for a month!
Hammersley is not far away, a pleasant walk through a quiet setting that is excellent value for money.
Just south of Perth is Collier Park Golf Course which has 27 holes with a beautiful expanse of parkland to try every club in your bag. The original 18 holes were designed by Peter Thompson until Michael Coates added the Lakes Nine in 1996. All three have a distinct feel, while the driving range and short pitch will help you with whatever you’re working on. in your game
I’ve played many tournaments at Collier Park over the years, both as an amateur and as a professional, and although it’s been a while since my last visit, I hear it just keeps getting better and better.
The 9 Best Golf Driving Ranges In Perth [2022 Guide]
The hardest part of golfing in Perth these days is figuring out which courses to play, as there are so many hidden gems.
Along with the aforementioned, Maylands Peninsula Golf Course offers a pleasant ride along the banks of the Swan River just 10 minutes from the CBD. Point Walter, also on the river, is about 20 minutes south and has excellent views around the nine-hole layout. Then there’s Whaleback, a beautiful 18-hole venue that includes a day-and-night double-deck indoor driving range so you can hit the ball to your heart’s content all year round.
Two very popular public golf courses in the northern suburbs are Marangaroo and Carramar. After finishing high school, I completed my three year apprenticeship to become a professional golfer at Marangaroo with Craig Duncan and Tim Crosby. When they expanded their operations in Caramar, I went to work there for a few years when it opened. Both designs present a very strategic challenge, with Karmar being the more demanding of the two. I have put a lot of wear and tear on both the grounds and practice facilities during my tenure and they are well worth your time to play a round or two.
All of these courses mentioned are excellent value for money and a thoroughly enjoyable experience that won’t hurt your scorecard too much. But, if you’re looking for the former and really testing your game, there are plenty of places that are up for the challenge.

Half an hour or so down the beach is the Joondalup Resort, designed by the famous American Robert Trent Jones Jr. It has 27 holes through dense vegetation, limestone cliffs and stunning lakes. Several holes on the virgin nine will take your breath away as you think, do I have to hit my ball on it? Dune ponds and dunes are equally effective but for different reasons as their names suggest. Take a lot of balls, although the roughness is unforgiving, plus I’ve yet to see one come out of a ditch or pond. But it’s all worth it because the entire complex is one of the most spectacular public facilities in the country.
Drive 30 minutes into the Swan Valley wine country and you’ll find the Wines Resort, which has hosted many professional tournaments in the 90s and 2000s, including the Heineken and Johnnie Walker Classic events. Designed by Graham Marsh and designed by Ross Watson, the two courses (named Ellenbrook and The Lakes) are testaments to the quality of golf and the layouts meander through the valley. They have recently added an 18 hole miniature golf course which will enhance the community and provide relaxing nightly entertainment if you stay at the Novotel.
The distinguishing feature of both Joondalup and Vines is their wide greens, so you need creative imagination and a silky touch to put your greens in good position.
Araluen Golf Resort is located in the Rollestone Hills, southeast of Perth. With many changes in elevation, designers Michael Cote and the late Roger McKay have used the terrain to spectacular effect. Early in the build process, Roger really wanted to cut down one of the first hollow trees, but it was left to catch. After Roger’s death, a sign was hung on the tree: “If you kill this tree, don’t blame Roger, he wanted to cut it down.”

If you’re up for a short drive, you’ll want to head 45 minutes south to find four beauties. Firstly, Secret Harbor is a links-style course designed by Graham Marsh that presents a variety of challenges, especially when the sea breeze is blowing. . . Which is almost every day.
Second Robert Trent Jones Jr. Design is Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club. A walk through the open bushes and 200-year-old Tuart trees makes for an experience that will not disappoint. On the coast, The Cut is a truly unforgettable course nestled along the Indian Ocean. With impressive views and divine holes, it will take you on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the course. Then you can drown your sorrows or celebrate your game while relaxing in the elegant clubhouse and restaurant.
At the top links Kennedy Bay for a southern feel. Designed by Cote, McKay and Ian Baker-Finch, Kennedy Bay is one of the premier golf courses in the country. If you find time for tea on a quiet day, consider yourself lucky. Because controlling the ball is important when the wind is blowing. With its design beautifully integrated into the existing landscape, this course is one of my favorite public spaces in the West.
Now if you get a chance to play some private courses around Perth there are a lot of good clubs to choose from but too many to name. However, a couple of favorites for me are Mount Lolly and Lake Carinup. Following in my family’s footsteps, I joined Mount Lawley Golf Club at the age of 12, and managed to become a member before the minimum age of 14. It was here that I began to familiarize myself with my game under the guidance of then head coach Evan Campbell. Slowly but surely I whittled my handicap down to individual figures and began to dream of playing golf for a living. As a young professional, I returned to the club and began taking lessons from Neil Simpson, who had taken over as head professional a few years earlier. Mount Lawley and Neil changed my career forever and a few years ago the club awarded me honorary membership, one of the sport’s proudest achievements. The course has stood the test of time and has maintained its position as one of the premier venues in the state.

Perth’s most famous private course is Lake Carinup Country Club, host of the ISPS Honda World Super 6 Professional event. It has seen various major Australian tournaments and legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Peter Thompson and Greg Norman have walked its course over the years. Originally designed by Alex Russell in 1928 and recently restored by Mike Clayton, this course weaves through classic rugged terrain and native gum trees. A smaller nine hole course is also located on the property and is an excellent complement to its championship counterpart.
In my opinion, Perth has a collection of public courses that are hard to beat in terms of variety, quality and value. There are many venues to please everyone and challenge golfers of all skill levels. You can play all year round and never be alone with the kangaroos and local wildlife keeping an eye on the action.
If you come to visit the West, try to see how many courses you can choose from the list. And if you are local
