The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife will soon be stocking the waters of San Antonio and New Braunfels with approximately 40,000 trout.

The Neighborhood Fishing Program offers residents of major cities and surrounding areas the opportunity to catch rainbow trout.

TPWD’s Rainbow Trout Program Manager said: “Rainbow trout like cold water, can be caught with a variety of baits and lures (worms, electric baits, lures, spinners, spoons, flies , etc.), and is easy to take home and eat. is good,” said TPWD Rainbow Trout Program Manager, Carl Bouilloire. “Our winter rainbow trout fishing program -en-ciel has been an angler’s favorite for over four decades.”

The department will stock up to 332,000 trout in Texas waters through March and because trout can’t survive outside the winter months, TPWD is encouraging youngsters to keep their daily pack at five.

The San Antonio facility will hold approximately 20,000 fish. These include Earl Scott Pond, Miller Pond and Southside Lion Park. Reserve dates December 2, 17, 23; January 7, 14, 21, 22, 27; and February 19.

An additional 20,000 rainbow trout will be stocked at Guadalupe Park, Whitewater Camp, Fourth River Road Crossing, Third River Road Crossing and Camp Huaco Springs. The New Braunfels area includes December 4, 11, 18, 23, and 31 and January 8, 15, 22, and 29. New Braunfels is known for its summer water activities, but the fun never stops. The school begins. The Guadalupe River is known for some of the best fly fishing in Texas and is one of the top 100 rivers in the United States!

Cold water flows from the Canyon Lake Dam, keeping the waters of the Guadalupe River cool enough for rainbow trout and brown trout to survive year-round. In fact, Telluris Canyon on the Guadalupe River is the only freshwater river in Texas cold enough to flow outdoors during the winter months.

The best time to fish for trout in New Braunfels is in the winter. Each year, Texas Parks and Wildlife populates the Guadalupe River with thousands of beautiful rainbows. The season starts at the end of November and lasts until the beginning of March. Trout are released into the Guadalupe River below the Canyon Lake Dam at New Braunfels and Whitewater Camp, Third and Fourth River Road Crossings, and Huaco Springs Camp.

Fishing and State of the Guadalupe River Report: Wednesday, December 28, 2016: Canyon Lake Dam was 300 cfs of clear water with a chalky green patch. Kerry Howell and Bill Casson from Austin, Texas joined Expedition Outfitters guide Kevin Stubbs to float six miles down the Guadalupe River. The weather started to fall but quickly cleared to reveal a beautiful winter day with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It was good with some rainbow trout. Some of the fish were close to the four pound class. There were lots of cattle in the water, but they weren’t as full as we had.
